Spring Equinox

March 17, 2018

While traveling North from Bodega bay after a training with Stewards of the Coast and Redwoods, we (Song Hunter and Charon Vilnai) witnessed a concentration of migrating whales like we had never seen before! Dozens must have been traveling along with us as we drive up beautiful Highway One.

All photos are from Fort Ross, looking west toward Sea Lion Rocks. Photos by Song Hunter

And then we saw them breach!  Though I wasn’t able to capture the actual breach, I caught the aftermath – the giant splash!  One of the most majestic sights we’ve ever seen until…

We saw a second breach!  Also not capturing the whale – sorry viewer!

From the whales that we saw out of the water, we believe they were humpback whales.

Now’s the time to get out there with your binoculars and camera, it’s Spring Equinox!
